My suggestion would be to learn as much He...Hi Alex
My suggestion would be to learn as much Hebrew as you can before you come to Israel, preferably in a group so you have people to talk to and meet to speak Hebrew.
Rosetta Stone will help, as will many other online Hebrew programs, but your best bet is to learn with a person. You can try Ivrit Talk, which is the Jerusalem Post's online Hebrew course or any of the other courses that use live people to teach rather than a recording. You can Google them.
Knowing how to speak Hebrew, or at least be able to have a conversation, even if basic, will make your Aliyah far smoother.
However, you probably won't have to be completely fluent in Hebrew to work in your profession as many of the hi-tech companies in Israel need English speakers. A company like Amdocs, for example, has branches all over the world so English is the common language.
If you are not sure about making Aliyah, my suggestion would be for you to start with the Hebrew, make contact with a shaliach in your area, speak to Nefesh B'Nefesh, speak to people you might know in Israel and look into all the aspects. You can also arrange a pilot trip before you make up your mind.
One more thing... If you do decide to make Aliyah, try save enough money to live on for your first year to 18 months so that you can give yourself time to learn Hebrew (at ulpan) and can focus on settling in while you look for work.
But don't feel daunted. Making Aliyah and living in Israel is hard, fun, exciting, trying, frustrating, wonderful, challenging and amazing.
And you'll be in good company as people are making Aliyah all the time.
Let me know if you need any help with anything else.
All the best
Darryl
Darryl Egnalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16745572652993547499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4579445553906699247.post-67415836584188153022013-01-04T23:22:00.973+02:002013-01-04T23:22:00.973+02:00I'm a professional American Jew who would cons...I'm a professional American Jew who would consider making aliyah but don't know how to go about it. Do I study Hebrew using Rosetta Stone on my own for 12 months and then start to make arrangements? My real concern is getting the same profession(software engineer) as I have now but I'm daunted at the prospect of having to be fluent in Hebrew for that.Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11205752419540502278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4579445553906699247.post-55162458877731066722011-01-30T16:22:12.096+02:002011-01-30T16:22:12.096+02:00Hi Claire.
